Earthquake owners Lew Wolff and John Fisher originally purchased the rights to the Earthquakes franchise in 2006 and choose to exercise their purchase option early, ensuring that the team would be part of the 2008 MLS season. As part of the agreement with MLS, plans for a soccer-specific stadium in San Jose are currently being negotiated with the hopes that the Earthquakes will have a permanent home to call their own for the 2011 season. The Earthquakes' track record is an impressive one, dating back to 1974 and the early days of the North American Soccer League.

The San Jose Sharks have won three of the last five NHL Division titles and finished in second place in the two years they did not win the division. The Sharks are the only team in the NHL to have advanced to the Conference Semifinals in the past four Stanley Cup playoffs and they are the first team to accomplish this since the Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche did so between 1999 and 2002. Current Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson was the first team captain. That's the day the Arena Football League approved the city of San Jose's application for an expansion franchise to begin league play in 1995. San Jose became the fifth AFL expansion team for the 1995 football season, along with St. Louis, Memphis, Hartford and Des Moines, Iowa. The expansion of the football league by five teams is the largest expansion of an American professional sports league since the National Hockey League added six teams in 1967.
